Palimpsest is the debut solo project from singer/ songwriter / instrumentalist Tyrone Noonan of No #1 charting, ARIA-award-winning Brisband george.
Bringing his soaring and powerful vocals into the jazz arena, Tyrone is backed by some of the country’s top jazz musicians for Palimpsest’s debut national self-titled album release (Oct. 18 - through Shock Records) and October-November tour.
Palimpsest creates a timeless, yet current sound which takes the listener on an entrancing journey across continents, cultures and songwriting eras, fusing elements of swing, Latin, soul, folk and modern grooves and melodies.
The band began in Brisvegas in the late 90s, inspired by artists such as New York pianist Brad Mehldau with the idea of re-interpreting popular/modern songs in a jazz style.
In keeping with this tradition, the debut album mixes original compositions - from goosebump-causing ballads to swingin’ numbers - with a deep re-interpretation of “Exit Music: for a film” (Radiohead), a Brazilian funk version of “Ashes to Ashes” (David Bowie) and a fast Cuban take on “America” by our own Vince Jones.
Yet the album also tips a hat to the “golden age” of songwriting, including classics “How Insensitive” and the up-tempo “Agua De Beber” by Brazilian legend Antonio Carlos Jobim, swing standard “Lullaby of Birdland”, the lively Latin-flavoured “I’ll Bet You Thought I’d Never Find You”, Paul McCartney’s “Junk” and Celtic traditional “Black Is The Colour of My True Love’s Hair”.
The album ends with a classy dance floor-friendly “nu Latin” remix of “I’ll Bet You Thought I’d never Find You” by Pacfica, featuring top Japanese DJ Chikashi.
